Construction Underway on Eastbound Lanes
Spring 2019 – PennDOT’s contractor has begun repairs to the long viaduct that carrier Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) along the west bank of the Schuylkill River between 30th Street and University Avenue exits in Center City Philadelphia.
Work is taking place on the underside of the mile-long structure to repairs the components that support the viaduct. Underside repairs will continue for the entirety of the two-year project.
Construction crews also are ramping up work on the top side of the viaduct, working mostly at night on the heavily traveled expressway. Drainage inlets on both sides of the viaduct have been cleaned out to facilitate storm water runoff during the construction phases.
Phase 1 construction on the right eastbound lane to repair expansion dams and deteriorated areas of eastbound pavement also is now underway.
Crews also have cleared overgrowth and mobilized a barge to provide access to the underside of the structure from the river.
Nighttime and weekend construction in 2019 will primarily take place on the eastbound side, repairing expansion dams, chipping out and repairing areas of the deck where the existing concrete pavement is damaged, and ultimately resurfacing the two eastbound lanes. The eastbound expressway will be closed overnight along with single lane daytime traffic patterns approximately ten weekends during the resurfacing efforts in 2019.
The westbound side of the viaduct will be repaired in 2020 utilizing similar nighttime and weekend construction activities as are being used on the eastbound side.
Under this project (SR 76, Section SRE), PennDOT is repairing the long, deteriorated viaduct that carries the Schuylkill Expressway/I-76 along the west bank of the Schuylkill River in Center City Philadelphia.
PennDOT’s contractor also begins work this spring on a bridge that carriers the Schuylkill Expressway over Route 23 and Arrowmink Creek in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County. Construction crews will be performing joint, bearing, and structural steel repairs to this structure. Nighttime single lane closures of both eastbound and westbound travel lanes will occur through the Fall.
